This photo is the tone-mapped result from a HDR photo composited with 5 photos, starting with camera raw. For this case, the exposure change for each shot was only 1/3 stop, so the total range excursion was only 5/3 stops.
My goal was more to resolve sharper features through multiple similar exposures, rather than to have a very large dynamic range. Though the 1/2 or 1 stop exposure change for 5 or more shots for HDR really would have helped, because Venus was extremely bright.

Common data: ISO 2500, focal length 375mm, EOS 1D Mark III
shot 1023: exposure 1/400 s at f/10
shot 1024: exposure 1/400 s at f/9
shot 1025: exposure 1/400 s at f/8
shot 1026: exposure 1/400 s at f/7.1
shot 1027: exposure 1/400 s at f/6.3
