HDR processing of 7 camera raw photos from tonight's incredible sunset, here in Silicon Valley, California. The spot objects in the photo are airplanes and stars as they moved from long exposure times (up to 6 seconds), as well as the multiple exposures necessary to composite HDR data, via camera raws from the DLSR.

The Full Moon, via HDR methods. 12 photos in 2 layers of 6 were used to create this one, starting with camera raw data. The view is obtained with a DSLR camera/telescope system having 1997mm focal length and f/12.1 aperture.

Tonight's waxing gibbous Moon, with 96% of the visible disk illuminated, as seen from modestly clear skies in Silicon Valley. This photo was created from a composite of 2 HDR photos, each using 6 photos that originated as camera raw. It was done using Adobe Camera Raw (via Bridge), Noise Ninja, LightZone, PhotoMatix Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS3, and then LightZone again. The camera was an EOS 1D Mark III attached to a 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. With the cameras 1.3X cropping factor, the camera-telescope system operates with a focal length of 1997mm at f/12.1. The Moon just fills the frame at this magnification.

Half Moon Redux

This is another version of the mid-February 2007 Half Moon, created from tonemapping a 7-photo HDR composite photo. 7 camera raw exposures 1-stop apart were taken, then auto-aligned to produce a HDR photo file. The tonal range of the data in that file was subsequently shifted (compressed) with a tonemapping operator in Photomatix Pro. The result was this photo, a JPEG that was derived from a 16-bit TIFF photo that emerged immediately after processing in Photomatix Pro. This photo has some little problems, but it has a lot more color depth and edge-definition that a post-processed single photo does. Tonight's Half Moon, from ISO 1000 photo taken with Canon EOS 1D Mark III attached to 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain f/12.1 telescope, with Tv=1/160. This optical configuration is equivalent to a 1997mm telephoto lens. Post-processed in LightZone from camera raw using Zone Mapper and Relight. Some testing work, prior to the full lunar eclipse in a week.
