Ever since the theft of my beloved ae-1, I have been using an Olympus sp310 digital. The digi was purchased in ignorance of the not-so-subtle subtleties of digital sensors (I was under the misapprehension that 7 megapixels crammed into a sensor the size of my pinky nail would yield quality photos).
So, how about digital noise reduction? I am unhappy with the photoshop filter, what else is out there? Any especially effective techniques?
Should I just champion digital noise as an aesthetic quality like some praise flim grain?
EG:
"What's that crap all over everything?"
-"That's not crap, that's dirt, man, that's real life, man, that's just the grit of reality [...&etc]"

Re: Digital noise - its reduction, or...
Fri, March 3, 2006 - 11:58 AMI have an Oly-5060 , so I'm not sure how similar our cameras are, but looks like yours gives a lot of bang for - hopefully a good price. Every year they come out with niftier technology.
Maybe I'm not saying anything you don't already know? but here goes.
This is what I set up on my 5060.
I create custom mode settings that may include:
- set to shoot in raw (its not a default)
- turn noise reduction "on"
- open the raw pic files with Oly's camedia program and use the feature to work with the raw file -- includes noise reduction feature that you can run raw pic thru (I've seen this actually remove noise on night shots).
And finally, I use the lowest ISO I can get away with.
I'm still learning (and still learning about my 5060).

Re: Digital noise - its reduction, or...
Sun, March 5, 2006 - 12:16 AMI've been shooting in the highest quality jpg modes just b/c didn't want to install the Olympus software. Will give it a shot.
I heard that taking a 'black shot' (the lens covered up completely, with the same aperture+ exposure settings), and subtracting from it the photo gets rid of most of the noise (doing this via 'difference' layer mode in photoshop), but this hasn't worked for me. I'll try turning off noise reduction in the camera, and see if anything happens.

Re: Digital noise - its reduction, or...
Sun, March 5, 2006 - 11:13 AMI've been digital for about five years. Yes, the grain is an inherent part of low light digital photography, just as film grain is a part of high film speeds and low light. I have had pretty good luck with a program called Noise Ninja at www.picturecode.com. It's costs like $45 but there is a trial (unfortunately with a watermark) so you can test it. You put in a profile for your specific camera and ASA and it extracts the noise from your shot. It has saved me a couple of times. It operates as a plugin for Photoshop or as a stand-alone program. Good luck.

Sun, March 5, 2006 - 12:04 PMHere's a couple night shots taken with my Oly5060. If I'm understanding what "noise" is correctly (a sort of graininess - which I have certainly experienced) - how would you rate the graininess here? :
