Flash questions (Canon)

I have not used an exernal flash at all and want to get started.

I'm interested in what would be a good flash for a Canon Digital SLR.

I'm interested in battery packs. I rented a battery pack and flash one weekend. It worked great but I didn't write down any of the gear. I think the battery pack would be essential if shooting at Burningman where there isn't much opportunity to recharge.

Strobing also interests me. I saw a picture of a fire dancer who looked like she had 10 arms. THe flash must have strobed. Is there a way to get a standard flash to strobe or is it just specialty flashes.

Focusing: I've heard that the Infrared sensor can be used on flashes to focus in low light. I'm very interested in this. I like low light photos, thus the reason I haven't used flashes much, but I have a hard time focusing in low light. Any extra help would be great, but I'd like to get the aided focusing with out the flash firing.

Extremely green newbie question!

Hello!

I have read the forum with interest and am very new to the world of digital photography. I recently attended a night time parade here in Norway and attempted to use my Nikon Coolpix S200 (7.1m megapixels) to take some pictures of the lights, fireworks and parade. No matter what setting I used and how ever much I tried automatic and manual settings I just could not get a very good picture. There is a castle on the hill which is lit up of an evening and every picture I took of that came out fuzzy despite using the highest setting. Also they took an age to save on some settings.

I have resigned myself to the fact that I am probably asking my little camera to just do too much and that I probably need to get a new, more expensive, camera if I wish to take better night pictures.

I'm really getting into this for the first time so I do not want to spend too much money on a camera but I do not want to spend too little and have it be a false economy by buying cheap and it being useless. Can anyone recommend a good quality but easy to use starter camera that I can try out as my first venture into the world of night time photography?

DSLRs and night photography

I have been experimenting with digital SLRs in night photography. I have tried a Olympus E20N and the Pentax *istD, and concluded that each camera is very different. I finally figured out how to reduce the noise in the E20N for long exposures at higher sensitivities and using it's internal noise reduction features. I like the low noise, but due to the noise reduction technique it uses, it's harder to do streak photography. it takes several exposures and does averaging on them, which causes the streaks to have "jumps" in them. I'm still learning how to use my *istD in long expoure modes and have determined that it certainly is noisier than the E20N at the same sensitivity setting.

just want to see whether anyone has used these cameras and wants to share their experiences.
These are from Saturday night at UCO/Lick, which held a concert, science lecture, and general observing session in the late-evening. This was my first serious low-light experimentation with the ISO 6400 feature of the Canon EOS 1D Mark III. Hope you may like.

Moon shots

I'm shooting with a Canon Rebel XT and I have a remote for taking the shot.

The last time I was out, I used the RAW setting and ISO1600 and several aperature settings and timing
The pics that captured the clouds well had the moved overesposed a s bright ball of light.
The ones where the moon looked decent had a flat black background.
I'm only using the stock 18-55 lens and I have a 50mm prime.

What is the best way to take full moon shots, or moon shots in general?
What should I be using for a lens ideally?
Is the Tungsten setting fine for this, that seemed to give me the best shots?
I want to create those big beautiful pics of the moon where you can make out some definition and shading in the moon itself
with light cloud cover in the sky reflecting the moonlight and being able to capture the halo around the full moon.
How do I do this?

Thanks

What type of camera should I buy?

I am a graphic artist and web desginer who has really gotten into digital photography. My Olympus D-380 is just not cutting it anymore and I have decided to purchase a digital SLR camera. This is a big purchase for me and I am very excited. I will most likely try to find something second hand and I am very new at this, I was hoping you could give me some suggestions of what I should be looking for.

Here are some of the things I want to do:

Mostly artistic photography to be printed and or used in graphic design.
I want to take pictures of the moon - control shutter speed manually would be nice
I want to be able to print decent quality 8x10 pics - what is the minimum MP required for this?
I want to take pictures of fire poi spinning - an option to use the flash right before the shutter closes on a long exposure is handy.
Good performance in low light applications
Quick refresh rate after turning on and taking pictures
Multiple shots with one push of the button
Price range of about $1000-1400 CDN

Any recommendations for lenses that a newbie should have to accomplish the above?
What about a good telephoto lens for a decent cost?

Any suggestions for good places online or in Victoria, BC for finding second hand equipment?

Thanks for all of you help,
Hiltz

Canon 5D problems with focussing in night shots

I recently was working in Costa Rica and started trying out some night shots with my new Canon 5D. I had used a 10D before so I thought that it should work similarly.
In the end it was really frsutrating trying to get some way of focusing in low light. It was too dark to see through the lens and the AF wouldn't work either. So I finally estimated the distance and did everything in manual mode. It was pretty hit and miss and in some situations I never got a shot that was to my liking.
Also I noticed that many of my longer exposures had some movment in them. Anything over a second long had motion blur in the distant lights. I was using a good heavy SLIK tripod with a remote trigger and there was no wind. I really can't figure out where the motion was coming from unless it was in the camera itself or slight ground tremors ( I was photographing near a volcano).
I would appreciate it if anyone has some suggestions that might work for night focussing.
Thanks,Bill

Hey there! I'm Rodney and I am new to the tribe. I have posted a few new images to the album. And speaking of the album, how can a Photography group have less than 100 images in the album after more than a year???

I want to see this album explode with new images. So, how about an assignment? Lets see, well if every member posted 1 new photo, we would be at about 400.

ASSIGNMENT: Every member post 1 image taken with a shutter time of ONE MINUTE or longer. This image can be from stuff you have already shot, but must be newer than the last image you posted.

There you go...have fun with it, and I wanna see results! Comments?

We live in Anchorage, Alaska and have a site that has a Blog page, podcast page, and many Photos pages for anyone to look at if they like. We grew up in North Dakota so Alaska is fresh and new to us though we have been here a while. We talk just about every day in the blog page and put videos up when we take them of wildlife or landscapes and such and put up photos on a regular basis as that is our new found hobby since we have been here. So take a peak and enjoy. :)

Still Image (and short video) contest - Zannel Fest

Photographing Tribe folks may be interested in Zannel Fest, an on-line contest for short form video, still images and art. We're looking for the kind of stuff we'll think is so amazing we'll want to pass on to our friends, family, office-mates, and nearby impressionable infants. And then we'll award selected entries with things like cash, shirts, syrup, and other crazy prize stuffs.

And luckily this festival is free to submit to. No more pesky registration fees when all you have to do is have access to the Internet and be able to press an upload button. But perhaps the best part of registering for Zannel Fest, in addition to prizes, is that you’ll also be (if you want!) one of the very first users of an almost launched content sharing network that encompasses mobile phones, the Internet, and possibly a device that hasn't been invented yet, like the PK-109 Video Helmet.

Participants are invited to submit original works in two categories - pictures or videos. Just make it fun, cool, sweet, or [insert your favorite superlative HERE].

All the info is here: www.zannelfest.com

Name your favorite photographer (night work, color, b&w, whatever) and why.

Mine? Robert Frank. Why? In his later work he proves that he has the guts to scratch his negatives and paint on his prints. It's also very punk rock that he can't spell to save his life. PoMo photo at work. I love it.

White Balance for night w/o flash?

Last week I was trying to take some shots at night without a flash, using only firelight (but lots of it). I didn't realize just how badly the 'auto' WB of my Nikon D70s was judging the white balance. Does anyone have any opinions on this? Or next time do I need to take 2 minutes and bracket a shot with all of the white balance options? Or just shoot raw and adjust afterwards? The pictures of people I took all look overly red, even when the fire was very bright and behind me.

Digital noise - its reduction, or...

Ever since the theft of my beloved ae-1, I have been using an Olympus sp310 digital. The digi was purchased in ignorance of the not-so-subtle subtleties of digital sensors (I was under the misapprehension that 7 megapixels crammed into a sensor the size of my pinky nail would yield quality photos).

So, how about digital noise reduction? I am unhappy with the photoshop filter, what else is out there? Any especially effective techniques?

Should I just champion digital noise as an aesthetic quality like some praise flim grain?

-"That's not crap, that's dirt, man, that's real life, man, that's just the grit of reality [...&etc]"

TRIBE INVITE -- Photography and Zen

Hello fellow photographers,

I'm cross-posting this on all of the major photo tribes, so fogive me if you see it a bunch.

<o> Photography and Zen <o> is a tribe dedicated to the ways that photographs impact our lives. This tribe is mostly for serious picture takers, but I've also invited snapshot takers, models, and people who don't know the front end of a camera from the back. We sometimes lose site of the non-photographers, butwithout them, we wouldn't have anyone to show our pictures to!

There are plenty of photo sites on Tribe that talk about the technical side, but photography is much more than that. Millions of pictures are taken every second. We inadvertently see hundreds of photos every day. They're a major part of modern society.

Some of the topics will be:

• The ethics of candid shots
• Becoming one with your subject
• Representing yourself as a photographer with regard to other photographers
• What photo buyers look for in an image
• The significance of photography as an art form
• Photography as an instrument to bring about social change
• Critique of images
• The UNtechnical techniques (such as knowing your instrument enough that it becomes second nature thus enabling you to lose yourself in your art -- stuff like that)
• Erotica vs. porn
• And anything else you want to talk about

So come on by and share your thoughts and/or images.

<o> Photography and Zen <o>

Looked through the posts, couldn't find a reference to this. I'm having a problem with some pictures I'm taking. I'm taking pictures of snow-fall at night with various moonlight and I'm getting glare. I've used different exposures and different f-stops and I'm still getting the same glare, off the snow. Best option for filters or settings, anyone? I'm using 400ASA Kodak in a Canon EOS 3.

I went to the Nocturnes open studios at Fort Mason over the weeknd - 12 night photographers had work on display, plus there was a cool short film on night photography.

There are still a couple of spots left for November's full moon trip out to Death Valley. Great location, and Tim B & Tom P are great instructors.

JPEG Compression & Data Loss

A friend of mine ran a test to show the impact of JPEG compression on various images. Personally I've found that night photos are more dramatically impacted by JPEG compression. Anyhow the underlying conclusion of always making edits in a lossless format should be well known, but if not this is the reason why (check out the following article):
http://www.jmg-galleries.com/articles/jpeg_compression.html

I knew about the data loss impact in theory, but had yet to see this type of comparison before. I hope you find it as interesting as I did.

Being that it’s now in the upper 80’s and humid as all heck it’s almost difficult to remember just how friggin cold it was over this past Winter. One thing I enjoyed about Winter was heading out at night to shoot the city knowing it was relatively “safe” since all the junkies and criminal types are less likely to be outside. Especially along the waterfront where there are no nightclubs or homes.

I shot this photo of the city from the North Shore, very near the water ramp for Heinz Field. It had just snowed and mine where the only human prints in the snow (lower left in the photo). My tripod happened to be set up were the muskrats went in and out of the water so I wasn’t entirely alone…

Hello, I love night photography and am so glad there is a group here. For this reason alone might make me convert from Myspace. I posted the OC Fair 2005 pic, shot with my Olympus 550 digital. Let me know if I have potential in the field and what is the best way/venue to do so. I've noticed some members have found good photo posting interfaces. Do I need my own website or are there easy (free) albums to use? Thanks for any help, Tracy

Just when you thought you might have known about every nook and cranny of the city....

I've added a new article to my web site titled "San Francisco Labyrinths". There are quite a few photos compiled over the last year that you might find of interest. Not surprising there are even a few night shots.

Enjoy and feel free to pass on this information to friends.

Hi all! I posted the new Brewery shot.

I thought I'd say hi and introduce myself. I have lived Seattle most of my life and have been an enthusiastic consumer of imagery the whole of it. I am one of the artists involved in the conversion of the Brewery into live/work space.

The space shown has since been walled into units, the floor filled and leveled and windows installed... The shot was taken using available light... mainly that of the freeway, located on the left.

I am going to la Serena in northern Chile... It is in the Atacama and it is the driest place on earth. Anyways... they also have the highest concentration of observatories in the world. I am planning on getting a long exposure of the stars and one of the observatories. Any suggestions?

how long of an exposure should I use?... I was thinking two hours.

I was also planning on setting up some kind of wind block as well.

What ap is best for long exposures?

Should I use my F3 (nikon), or go with the 6x4.5 Fuji.

How do I find the bit of sky that is directly above the southern axis. The north star is easy... but I am new to the Southern sky.

Now if you do not know what this is, you should, especially with nighttime photography. Does anyone know of a film with very little reciprocity failure? I like to use FP5 B+W but I have to add something like 150 extra seconds to a 30 second exposure just to get it to look right.

Went to the Nocturnes full moon workshop at Rush Ranch (near Fairfield) Tuesday. It was a little bit hazy for star trails, but a really great location for light painting - lots of old farm equipment & a cool Native American tule. There's a coupla shots in my profile. Exposures were 7 minutes at f8, ISO 100, digital. I was a little worried about long exposure noise, but everything turned out great.

Wish I could go on the upcoming Death Valley trip.

Anyone else ever do this....just grab an old polaroid automatic 100 and load up some 3000 asa film(expensive though) and roam around. If you do this with the 80asa, you can pull a 2 1/4 neg from it with some really nice jaggy edges.

I've been having fun with Velvia 50 and Provia 100F. I'm set to start tinkering with Fuji T64. I've liked what I've seen from others with T64.
